Comments:  A very warm and wet month.  With 7.15 inches of precip it was the wettest month of the year and the wettest October since 2011.  The rain gauge had to be emptied on nineteen days this month, three days had more than an inch measured.  An intense off-shore system on the 17th dropped the barometer to 28.84", left 1.74 inches of rain and produced a 39mph wind gust here. ML's Note: West Island Town Beach recorded a gust to 88MPH on the 17th.  Temperatures overall were very warm.  Just one day during the month had the overnight low drop into the 30's.  We were picking ripe tomatoes  almost until the end of the month.  80F on the 2nd equaled the record high for that date.

Comments: A drier than normal month this September in Fairhaven. Just six days with measurable precipitation this month yielding 1.52 inches which is 37% of the average amount. It was the driest September since 2007. The year as a whole though still has a surplus amount of precip of more than three inches... The average daily mean temperature for the month was a bit warmer than the long term average but it was still the coolest September since 2013. Just one day hit the 80 degree mark... Hurricane Dorian passed about 200 miles southeast of Fairhaven on the 7th with minimal effect, 0.27 inches of rain and a 25 mph wind gust... Eleven days this month were judged to be with predominately clear skies, just five days overcast.

Comments: A warm August. Average daily mean temperature of 71.7F is 1.0 degrees above normal. There were no 90-degree-days this month but there were sixteen days with high temps into the 80's... Precip total was on the low side with 3.38 inches measured, 82% of normal. Heaviest rain event came on the 28th and 29th when the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin passed well to the southeast of the area. There were six thunderstorm-days this month, a rather high number. None of the thunderstorms were categorized as being severe... Summer Season's average daily mean temperature was 71.0F some 1.3 degrees warmer than normal. Nine of the past ten summers have averaged warmer than normal. It was also a very wet summer with 15.66" which ranks as the 4th wettest summer on record (precipitation)

Comments: A warm and very wet July. Generally a very warm and humid month but extremely humid on the 20th and 21st with dew points in the upper 70's and heat indexes well over 100 degrees. Average daily low temperature for the month of 66.5F is 3.2 degrees warmer than the long term average...An intense thunderstorm cell with very heavy downpours moved over the area on the 23rd. A short time later the cell moved over Cape Cod creating three EF-1 tornadoes. Remnants of Hurricane Barry passed south of the area leaving just over an inch of rain on the 18th.

Comments: A rather wet June this year in Fairhaven. 5.25 inches is the wettest June since 2013. Seven consecutive days, the 16th through the 22nd, had measurable precipitation... Daily average temperatures averaged slightly warmer than the long term average with no real temperature extremes either warm or cold. The highest temperature recorded for the month was just 83 degrees. Thirteen days had positive departures, twelve days had negative departures and fives days were exactly normal... High number of foggy days this month.

Comments: A cool and a bit drier than normal month. Daily average mean temperature of 56.0 degrees is the coolest May since 55.4 degrees in 2008. The season's first 70-degree-day came rather late on the 20th and the 80 degree mark was not hit which is kind of unusual for May... Several wet periods during the month but precip amounts were low. 3.35 inches for the month is about 90% of the normal amount. There were two thunderstorm day this month... The Spring season average slightly cooler and drier than the long term average. There were six thunderstorm days this spring.

Comments: A wet and warm April this year in Fairhaven. Nineteen days with measurable precipitation made for some soggy ball fields and golf courses. Most of the precip events were on the light side. Just barely over an inch did fall in a two day period on the 20th and 21st... Overall it was a warm month (1.3 degrees above average), the warmest period being from the 19th through the 21st. The 70 degree mark was not broken here at this coastal location. The last freezing temperature of the season was probably on the 11th (27F). Lots of foggy days and two days with thunder were recorded.

Comments: Meteorological Spring got off to a slow start. The first eight days of the month averaged more than 7 degrees colder than normal. It was also the snowiest period of the season with a total of 6.6 inches falling from the 2nd through the 4th. The last half of the month was more March-like with moderating temperatures with some windy days. Overall March was colder and drier than normal. Snowfall was just a shade above average.

Comments: Temperature averaged out just about normal this February. No real temperature extremes either high or low. The 50 degree mark was just barely hit once and the low just dipped into single numbers on one day... Precipitation for the month was just slightly above the average. A mixed snow, sleet, freezing rain event on the 12th and 13th left 1.41" total precip. Again this month's snow was on the light side with just 6.8" being measured... The Winter Season was slightly warmer than normal with above average precipitation. Snowfall this winter was very light with 8.6". It was the least amount of snow since 7.6" in the winter of 1997-98.

Comments:
A wet January this year in Fairhaven. On the 19th - 20th we got over 3 inches of precip with a few rumbles of thunder. There were two other 1+ inch storms during the month. The 6.20" total for the month is the wettest January since 2006... Snow shovels were collecting dust as there was just 1.5" of snow for the month, the least amount of snow in January since 1.3" in 2007. December and January snowfall total was a mere 1.8"... The average daily mean temperature for the month averaged right around the normal mark. Two days had high temps in the 50's and three days had the the low drop into the single numbers. There were no days with zero degree temperatures.

Comments: A warm and very wet year. Average daily mean temperature was 0.8 degrees warmer than the long term average. Eight of the past nine years have averaged warmer than normal... Very wet year with 57.73 inches measured. It was the 4th wettest year since 1992 and most precip since 2009... A couple of hurricane remnant systems effecting the area with some heavy rain... Snowfall for the year was on the light side.

Jan: -3F on the 7th was the only day of the year with below zero temperatures.

Feb: Warmest and wettest February on record. 2nd lowest February snowfall on record, 1.2”.

Mar: Stormy month. 3.21” rain with 51mph wind gust on the 2nd-3rd. 11.5” wet sticky snow     on 13th snapped trees, brought down power lines.

Apr: Wet and very cold. Coldest April since 2003, 4th coldest on record.

May: Warm and dry month. 3rd snowiest spring season on record.

Jun: Delightful weather. Warm temperatures with comfortable humidity levels.

Jul: Driest month of the year with just 1.14”. Very warm, 8 days 85F or higher.

Aug: Very warm with periods of oppressive humidity. Warmest August on record, average daily mean 75.9F.

Sept: 4th warmest September on record. 13 days with fog.

Oct: Remnants of Hurricane Michael leaves 2.95” rain on 12th. Thunder with pea-sized hail on the 23rd.

Nov: Wettest month of the year and wettest November on record, 8.94”. Wettest fall season on record, 20.53”.

Comments: A rather warm and dry December with hardly any snow. Average daily temperature was 0.5 degrees above normal. The lowest temperature for the month was a not so cold 18F. Seven days this month had high temperatures into the 50's... Precipitation was about three-quarters of an inch below normal. Just three-tenths of an inch of snow was measured. Only five Decembers since 1992 have had less than an inch of snow for the month.

Comments: A cold and very wet November this year in Fairhaven. A continuous line of storm systems brought a precip total of 8.94”. It was the wettest November on record (since 1992). Numerous flash flood advisory messages issued by NWS. Three calendar days logged 1+ inch totals... The month started out on the warm side but quickly turned colder than normal by the second week of the month. On the 21st-23rd an arctic air mass settled over the region dropping the temperature to 12F early on the morning of the 23rd. 12F is the lowest November temperature recorded (since 1974)... Snowfall on the 15th-16th totaled 3.5 inches. Historically about 50% of Novembers records measurable snow... The Fall season was warm and very wet. 20.53” of precip is the 2nd wettest Fall season on record.

Comments: A warm first two weeks of the month and a cold last two weeks results in October averaging slightly warmer than the long term average. It was the coldest October since 2009 and averaged 6.3 degrees colder than last October. The first freezing temperature of the season arrived on the 21st... It was a wet month with 6.47” measured. It was the wettest October since 2011. The remnants of Hurricane Michael left a total of 2.95” of rain on the 11th and 12th. A thunderstorm with pea-sized hail on the 23rd... In nearby Woods Hole an EF-0 tornado/waterspout was confirmed by NWS.

Comments: Another warmer than normal September this year is Fairhaven. It was the 4th warmest September on record (since 1974). Eight of the past nine Septembers have averaged warmer than normal. The first week of the month saw temperatures well into the 80's breaking two daily high temp records. The low temperature for the month just barely made it into the 40's on the last day of the month. 49F is the highest low temp for September on record... Monthly precipitation was wetter than average for the first time since April. Remnants of Hurricane Florence brought 0.64” on the 18th... Lots of foggy days this month.
