A West Island Lobster Bake in July - 2013 Fairhaven, MA Add Video

The Fairhaven Improvement Association held it's annual ($42.00 a plate) Lobster Bake at The West Island Improvement Association hall on Sunday July 21, 2013. Unlike the unfortunate weather cancellation of The Homecoming Fair almost a month prior, an isolated shower gave way to sunny skies. The West Island Improvement Association will hold a similar bake on August 18. Photos by MLBaron - Special to The Advocate

Your lobster bakes reminds me of our clam bakes we used to have every July 4th. That was a very special day for me because those clam bakes officially launched the new summer. For days, we would dig quahogs and my friend and neighbor set out a line of lobster traps off the backside of the Island. Because we had so-o-o many people attend, we had to buy bushels of clams although we could dig them right off our beach.

We kinda did it like the Indians did. We dug a deep pit on our beach and filled it with beach rocks and driftwood. We would cook the rocks for 2 hours in order to cook the food. We had it all! Clams, lobsters, hot dogs, corn on the cob, onions, potatoes, and Portuguese chourico! We layered the food and wrapped each layer in cheese cloth. The layers were put right on the hot rocks, and we covered it all with wet seaweed and a canvas tarp. My job was to help gather the beach rocks and then my job was to make a giant pot of thick and rich clam chowder. (None of that bogus Manhattan red crap!) Dear Mom was next door whipping up stuffed quahogs for 50! After the feast, we'd mellow a bit and then head in to New Bedford to watch the fireworks. Helo-o-o summer!
