Vintage Nova Scotia Style Lobster Boat Headed Out to Sea Add Video

SCUNGILLI TIME! - Captain Sakwa started up his unnamed Nova Scotia style lobster boat and headed out of Hoppy's Landing this Saturday - October 8, 2016 at 648AM. Although not as lucrative as lobsters, there's still a market for the local "Smooth Conch" or "Channel Whelk" meat. He usually unloads his catch at Hoppy's Landing. According to Heather Haggerty of BIG G SEAFOODS of New Bedford, the channel whelk is processed at the facility. They are shucked, steamed and then frozen for shipment in the US. She said they shouldn't be confused with the Queen Conch from down south. There are 2 states that have a high demand for "Scungilli", Rhode Island and New York, who's large Italian population has a special holiday Christmas Eve dinner called, "The Feast of The Seven Fishes" or "Festa Dei Sette Pesci" were one of the 7 served fish species is the Whelk.
