This Nova Scotia style lobster boat lies beached in the soft sand south of the West Island Causeway. Strong southerly winds over 26 knots (Oct 13, 2009) caused the vessel to drift to the soft sanded beach This clip also shows the inside of the wheelhouse and gear in the waist. High tide at 430 this afternoon with northwesterly winds may be a good time to try to free it. The vessel ran aground before the high southerly winds arrived. Apparently the Nova Scotia style lobster boat 's mooring chain became dislodged., and had nothing to do with the strong winds! This is the famous lobster boat on YouTube from the December 12, 2008 storm! http://www.westislandweather.com/apps/videos/videos/view/1510067-west-island-lobster-boat-in-storm NOW...AT 11 AM...SHOWERS LIKELY. http://westislandweather.com/ Motorists maneuver through the large clumps of seaweed deposited on the West Island Causeway from the December 12,2008 coastal storm. Braving the causeway with waves and sea spray crashing over may be exciting but it is devastating to a vehicles under carriage and body. One trip like this can add years (lots of years) to a vehicles wear and tear., along with electrical problems. (TIP: Don't buy a used car from West Island!)The causeway is only 3 feet above sea level., so when southerly gales approach with a full moon tide the causeway can become briefly impassible. However a potent hurricane can take it out significantly. For more details on this storm and live weather updates visit http://www.westislandweather.com
The bow of this small lobster skiff is all that remains above water. Debris inside the hull probably is keeping it afloat. It is munknown what kind of damage it sustained from being battered against the causeway rocks. It will have to be taken out of the water and assessed to see it it's salvageable. (It was later refloated and tied up at Hoppy's Landing)
