Trails and beaches exposed before the spring foliage arrives on West Island. Video by The West Island Weather Station - KA1WBH. West Island is located off southern Massachusetts in Buzzards Bay about 8 miles northwest of Martha's Vineyard and 13 miles west of the Cape Cod Canal. Almost half of the 750 acre island is a pristine state reservation. The 338 acre reservation is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Conservation and Recreation. An educational poster at the park entrance describes the reservation as a habitat for common and rare resident and migratory bird species. The land includes salt marshes, brackish ponds, mud flats, rocky headlands, wetlands, hardwood forests and sandy beaches. The land was acquired in 1988, from Realty Transfer of New Jersey for $1.6 million. A PEACEFUL FLAT CALM This spectacular video looking to from Hoppy's Landing to Wilbur Point 1 mile away. It's ironic that the sun at its lowest in the sky can bring such brilliant light to create imagery like this., with a little help of no breeze. The music although haunting - was actually very beautiful and perfect for this clip with the music slowing pulsating in waves. Surreal sound for a surreal video. "Voices carry very far on still water like this. I once had a "conversation" with someone on Reservation Rd from Fort Phoenix. I've heard the Dartmouth band playing from Wilburs Point." Eric Mikal Birkeland The earth is also nearest to the sun this time of year and is fast approaching (perihelion) its peak in about 30 days. *ML's Note - Many might question how the earth can be the closest to the sun this time of year while the winter brings us the shortest days and coldest temps. The problem is the low angle of the sun and its speed across the sky. In a nut shell - the sun isn't high or out long enough in the northern hemisphere. December Solstice (Winter Solstice) is on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 5:44 am in Boston. This day is 6 hours, 13 minutes shorter than on June Solstice. In most locations north of Equator, the shortest day of the year is around this date. Earliest sunset is on December 8. However, our friends in the southern hemisphere are beginning to enjoy the Summer of 2016-2017. MLBaron DHD Video - West Island Weather Station Dec 7 2016 at 1230PM. http://www.westislandweather.com
In 1987, SAVE WEST ISLAND was formed. This small grassroots group fought to save the pristine backside of West Island from being destroyed into a development of over 100 homes and become private property forever. In December of 1988, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts signed into an agreement for the purchase and acquisition of over 350 acres of the bird sanctuaries, forestry and wetlands and named it "The West Island State Reservation". "Save West Island" received the coveted National Award "A" from the Audubon Society in 1989 for "Excellence in Environmental Action". It was an honor to have served as the groups Publicity Director. After looking back, I can vouch for a lot of my fellow members, that this was one of the greatest "Leaps of Faith" in our lifetime. I waited for the right sky for a reason when producing this clip. TWILIGHT AFTER A WEST ISLAND SNOWSTORM - The biggest snowstorm to hit Southern Mass since February 15, 2015, is now history. West Island Weather Station recorded 14.5" while other areas had numbers close to 19" in Wareham. Visitors to our web site spanned the globe from Germany, Norway, Australia, Mexico, Russia,Great Britain, and plenty of our snow bird friends in Florida and other parts of the United States. This report the night before: An offshore storm system will affect Southeast New England with accumulating snow with confidence growing in a plowable snowfall for that area for Friday Morning and a track that will see that plowable snowfall cover much of South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island for Friday Morning. Another storm system has the potential to bring another plowable to possibly significant snowfall some time between Saturday Morning to Sunday Morning.. ..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 12 AM to 12 PM Friday for all of South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island and Cape Cod and the Islands for 3-5" of snow with isolated higher amounts to 6" possible. Across interior South-Central Rhode Island and interior Southeast Massachusetts, 1-3" of snow is likely and outside of these areas, a coating to 1" of snow is possible with amounts of 2" possible in a few locations.. ..There will be a sharp northwest cutoff between the heavier accumulating snow and the lighter snowfall area with this offshore storm system. The current trend is for a track slightly closer to the area which resulted in expansion of the Winter Weather Advisory for all of South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island.. ..A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for Cape Cod and the Islands from Saturday Morning into Sunday Morning for 6" or more of snow and there is the potential for advisory level snow in other parts of Southeast Massachusetts and South-Central RI with this system. Similar to the Friday system, it is an offshore track with a sharp cutoff between heavier snow and lighter snow and also a wide model spread on what could occur with this system.. ..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports Friday Morning in and around the Winter Weather Advisory area. SKYWARN Activation in some form is likely on Saturday but too early to get into specific details on the type and timing of any activation for Saturday..
King Tide Event West Island Fairhaven at Causeway and Almond St shoreline 11 15 2016 0800HRS The King Tide was merciful this Tuesday morning at the high tide cycle at 8AM, November 15, 2016. The yards, under water, are part of the property that abutts Almond St - on the west shoreline of West Island. Full Moon tides are at their highest this time in the Fall and around the first week of Spring when the sun and moon exert a double gravitational pull, creating higher tides than usual. Add a storm system with a southerly wind direction, and tidal surges can get much worse along Southern Mass and Buzzards Bay. The hurricane barrier has been busy with scheduled closings and very likely will continue over the next few cycles.
