Fairhaven Harbormaster David Darmofal and Shellfish Warden Timothy Cox make an attempt to free Captain "Bob's" lobster boat this (Oct 13, 2009) afternoon when the wind shifted to the north and the tide was coming in. The vessel lost it's mooring sometime the night before according to it's captain and had nothing to do with the southerly gales that arrived this morning. This Nova Scotia style lobster boat lies beached in the soft sand south of the West Island Causeway. Strong southerly winds over 26 knots (Oct 13, 2009) caused the vessel to drag or break it's mooring. This clip also shows the inside of the wheelhouse and gear in the waist. TowBoat US is handling the salvage case. High tide at 430 this afternoon with northwesterly winds may be a good time to try to free it. NOW...AT 11 AM...SHOWERS LIKELY. TEMPERATURE AROUND 53. Luckily, there doesn't appear to be any damage as the loose boat ended up in the soft sand with no rocks near by. Strong northwest winds later today might help free the vessel when the tide comes in. The October 7, 2009 storm brought in 30MPH winds with a high gust of 38MPH this morning that caused superficial damage to the scaffolding outer skin at the Fairhaven Sconticutneck Rd Water Tank. The approximate135 ft tall tank is being serviced with routine sand blasting and a new coat of paint. According to an engineer on site, he stated that the sand blasting had recently been completed and that the outer skin was designed to give way in high winds. He also mentioned that the scaffolding will be taken down in a few days anyway.
