The passenger/vehicle ferry ANNA C. left the city harbor, June 18, 2020 at 1 PM for apparent sea trials after some maintenance in Fairhaven. Video by MLBaron for westislandweather.com Built in 1986 by Eastern Marine Shipyard in Panama City, Florida exclusively for Interstate Navigation Company owner John H. Wronowski. The vessel was designed by John W. Gilbert Associates, Inc., and is USCG, Sub-chapter “K” certified for 1285 passengers. The ANNA C. was originally designed to operate as the “winter boat”, and ran year-round on the Block Island run, until the ferry BLOCK ISLAND went into service in 1997. The ANNA C. was originally considered to be an improved design, from that of her near sister ship CAROL JEAN, which had served as the previous winter vessel. The ANNA C. was built with more horsepower, enhanced maneuvering characteristics, a greater length for increased vehicle capacity and insulated passenger cabins. The vessel features (3) Cummins diesel propulsion engines for a total of 3750 HP. The vessel is 190 feet in length, 98 gross tons, and features a service speed of 16.5 knots. The vessel may carry 35 automobiles, and utilizes a two-lane configuration for the carriage of commercial trucks and vehicles. The passenger cabins on the vessel feature food and beverage concessions, table and bench seating and standard bench style seating on the exterior decks.

*ML's Note: Our webcam at Town Beach stops scanning the horizon about this time of day when darkness settles in. It was fixed for the last hour to this exact position and captured the dramatic fire at Salter's Point , 7 miles across the bay from West Island. The 42 minute clip started at 418 PM Nov 7, 2019 and was sped up to 10X speed. An unoccupied summer cottage fully-involved in fire at 70 Naushon Ave - Salter's Point in Dartmouth was visible 7 miles away from the town beach weather station webcam at West Island, Thursday evening at 454 PM. November 7, 2019. The owners were listed from Medfield, MA. The 6-bedroom waterfront house, built in 1910, was valued at $1,500,000. The 2-Alarm blaze was confined to one structure as the wind gusting to 22 knots out of the west whipped the flames. 2 nearby houses were scorched but saved by the Dartmouth Fire Dept. No injuries were reported. Webcam video from Town Beach for westislandweather.com

DOGS and FOLIAGE BRING OUT THE BEST in FALL Luna and Shelby took their first walk in the reservation in 4-months. Not one mosquito buzzed us, nor did I find one tick, however, they're still out there. The temperature was 48 degrees with the wind out of the northwest at 12 gusting to 15MPH. The humidity was 63% and ocean 57.3F. The path debris was expected with lots of broken branches and leaves but passable. Two large trees fell in the main trail from the 88MPH gusts in the October 17 Gale. They blocked any vehicle egress to the end of the path and will be removed soon. The foliage has a bit to go but was progressing into full color nicely. Visit The West Island Reservation page here: https://www.westislandweather.com/westislandreservation.htm

The West Island State Reservation trail was void of any visitors on an exceptionally beautiful Saturday afternoon. The EEE mosquito threat is very likely the reason outdoor activity around places like this, which is a mosquito rich environment with perfect conditions for them to breed. One person was spotted entering the trail and quickly turned around after getting swarmed by hungry insects. We were inspecting the trail by bike and testing camera gear for a video shoot in the Fall. *ML's Note: The first mosquito-killing frost at this location last year, was October 26, 2018. A vintage West Island cottage built-in 1955 was demolished August 19, 2019 to make way for a new home at the corner of Bluepoint Rd and Dogwood St. The cottage was one of the "originals" that gave the island its unique charm and identity. There's still a few remaining scattered about, some (but not all) now surrounded by silly "McMansions". A sign of the times. More changes to the neighborhood with Bluepoint Rd getting blacktopped anytime now. The 70-year-old dirt road has been marked off with stakes. *ML's Note: You could rent a West Island summer cottage like this for $10.00 per month, the year it was built in 1955.

Our West Island Drone captured a brief thunderstorm rolling up the Acushnet River and directly over Sconticut Neck and West Island, early Sunday evening at 540PM. August 4, 2019. A much needed drenching rain filled our rain collector at town beach with .60" in less than 30 minutes. *ML's Note: As bad as the radar signature looked, the storm yielded little wind and lightning at town beach. Dry and cool tonight with Monday, the weather pick of the week! More showers and thunder a few days away. The forecast, web cams at westislandweather.com

SUMMER STEAM at WEST ISLAND A rolling fog bank oscillated back and forth for most of the day, July 5, 2019, at West Island. At the time, the fog so thick it created a mist, then the sun would burn through, and the fog would return again. A common occurrence this time of year along Southern MA. It was a beautiful Sunday morning, this last day of June, 2019 for the scenic 16.75 mile round trip. *ML's Note: Many from out of town, "bump" into Fairhaven by accident (ask any waitress) and are mesmerized by the astounding beauty of our area.
