Right below at the beginning of this clip, 2 cottages once stood before Hurricane Bob swept them away on August 19, 1991. Wilbur Point has a large fresh water pond that once was used to make ice for the local grocery store. In the pre-WW II days, residents had many large goldfish in the pond. On the top center, Cuttyhunk Island is visible 13 miles away. Angelica Island is visible at the end of Wilbur Point. Goulart Memorial Drive was newly paved at the time of this clip, done on May 21, 2017. westislandweather.com

A new automated pay meter for parking, more picnic tables, clam shell resurfacing, and rehab of the shack centered on Long Island are in the works, according to Fairhaven Harbormaster Tim Cox. *ML's Note: Drone footage and video for westislandweather.com Hoppy's Landing construction June 2008. Long Island, Fairhaven, MA MLBaron File Video By CHARIS ANDERSON Standard-Times Posted Jul. 18, 2008 @ 12:25 am FAIRHAVEN ? The construction project at Hoppy's Landing, originally slated to be completed by the end of June, has been granted a 40-day extension. "It was a compressed timeline," Town Planner William Roth said of the initial project schedule. "You always hit snags." The project, funded through a $386,000 grant from the state's Seaport Advisory Council, includes an 80-foot fixed pier, a floating dock and a boat ramp. The fixed pier has been constructed, and workers are preparing to pour concrete for the ramp over the next couple weeks, Mr. Roth said. The steel float is being made in Rhode Island and will be barged to Hoppy's Landing when it is finished, he said. Delays in the project's schedule were caused by "unforeseen things," Mr. Roth said, such as boulders that had to be removed and bedrock in the area of the boat ramp that was shallower than expected. The project's scope is also being expanded to include some dredging. There is a hump of dirt at the end of the boat ramp, Mr. Roth said, so the town is filing for a change order and permits to remove it. "Why have a boat ramp with a speed hump in front of it?" he asked. "We're trying to do the right thing. It's just going to take a little more time." The town has hired an electrician to run power to the end of the pier, Mr. Roth said. A light and a power outlet will be installed. "We just think that, upon further review ... the most prudent thing to do was run power to the end of the pier," he said. Although the changes could affect the overall project costs, the project is still within its budget, according to Mr. Roth. "Every project has contingency built in. We are well within our contingency."

Officer Richard Claflin was probably the first in the region to initiate a dash cam in his cruiser in 1983. He taped every street in the Town Of Fairhaven in the fall of 1983. He did this to document what Fairhaven streets were like for other to see someday. Over 30 years later, the clips have been transferred and digitized in several 9 minute segments. All sections in town were covered. Original police calls can be heard on the cruisers radio. For those who weren't around town back then, I caution this is as boring as watching paint dry. But if you were around, the footage may show someone you knew, a familiar car or house or maybe even yourself. Guess where the clips were taken! MLBaron Historic Archives.

EVERY 90 SECONDS A CHRISTMAS TREE WILL BE CUT Fairhaven - Since 2001, The Douglass Family Annual Christmas Tree Sale down the end of Sconticut Neck Road, Fairhaven, MA will get underway December 9 and 10th. Buyers can choose and cut the tree of their choice., or it can be cut for you. "The tree farm was started to restore the land to an agricultural use and to provide a retirement job. There was a grand but undefined plan to use some of the proceeds for charitable causes but we were thinking of scholarships or food banks. When we became aware of ALS TDI and their mission and how it could impact our family, it was a no-brainer." Dick Douglass *ML's Note: A drought last year halted sales. A first time look from the Douglass Tree Farm from the air shows the wide expanse of healthy trees available this season.
