Edgewater Marsh Area March 29 2018 10AM West Island Weather Station drone operations. Rising tide cycles are increasing at an alarming rate where Sconticut Neck could become an island itself requiring a causeway. A federal climate science assessment recently concluded that a rise in sea level of one to four feet within a century is likely. Ask any local, they are taking notice. This video was taken at low tide. A recent video clip taken down the end of Edgewater St - the necks lowest point - illustrates how low this area already is at sea level

PEACE BROUGHT TO YOU BY THOSE WHO SERVED A peaceful Memorial Day video shot in the early morning in 2016, I modified it for this 2018 presentation. "Those who talk the most about what's wrong with our country, have done the least for it. For those that have served, and continue to serve, need not talk at all." SUNRISE at The West Island State Reservation Friday - April 27, 2018 at 558AM. The temperature was 48.3 with a gentle breeze out of the west-southwest at 1.5MPH. The humidity was 92%. The ocean in Buzzards Bay read 50.5 degrees. We sent our drone up slowly to 400ft aiming east to Falmouth as the sun came up through some broken overcast. Some minor weather action passing through, however Summer like heat is expected to make headlines next week. ML's Note: 15 Years ago today, Buzzards Bay, West Island and Mattapoisett would soon be devasted by a major oil spill. Birds and wildlife would die in front of helpless onlookers along the shore. My first person reflection and story here: http://www.westislandweather.com/oilspill2003.htm
Captain Hoppy Hobson on the bow, directed Captain Sakwa at the helm as they guided his lobster boat onto a boat trailer at Hoppy's Landing for routine maitenance. The winter season took it's toll with lots of ice surrounding his boat. "The hull was scraped up pretty good from the chunks of ice this season." Sakwa said. The boat was transported by Bayline Marine to his Farmfield St home. Captain Sakwa services his boat from stem to stern himself. When asked how long it would take for the boat to get back in service, he snapped with a grin "How do I know? When it gets done it gets done." A predictable answer from this old sea dog at Hoppy's Landing. MLBaron video for westislandweather.com How bad was the ice? Jack's Cove and Long Island featured in our continuing series of drone flights over West Island last year. This footage shot on May 21, 2017 at about 280 feet. Over 50 miles of flight time over the summer last year in this area brought some great video when the weather cooperated. *ML's Note: Considering how neglected the waters are in other countries, you can't appreciate enough how clean our bay is. Hoppy's Landing was devasted by a massive plume of oil on this 15th Anniversary of The 2003 Oil Spill - April 28, 2003. Right below at the beginning of this clip, 2 cottages once stood before Hurricane Bob swept them away on August 19, 1991. Wilbur Point has a large fresh water pond that once was used to make ice for the local grocery store. In the pre-WW II days, residents had many large goldfish in the pond. On the top center, Cuttyhunk Island is visible 13 miles away. Angelica Island is visible at the end of Wilbur Point. Goulart Memorial Drive was newly paved at the time of this clip, done on May 21, 2017. westislandweather.com
A new automated pay meter for parking, more picnic tables, clam shell resurfacing, and rehab of the shack centered on Long Island are in the works, according to Fairhaven Harbormaster Tim Cox. *ML's Note: Drone footage and video for westislandweather.com Hoppy's Landing construction June 2008. Long Island, Fairhaven, MA MLBaron File Video By CHARIS ANDERSON Standard-Times Posted Jul. 18, 2008 @ 12:25 am FAIRHAVEN ? The construction project at Hoppy's Landing, originally slated to be completed by the end of June, has been granted a 40-day extension. "It was a compressed timeline," Town Planner William Roth said of the initial project schedule. "You always hit snags." The project, funded through a $386,000 grant from the state's Seaport Advisory Council, includes an 80-foot fixed pier, a floating dock and a boat ramp. The fixed pier has been constructed, and workers are preparing to pour concrete for the ramp over the next couple weeks, Mr. Roth said. The steel float is being made in Rhode Island and will be barged to Hoppy's Landing when it is finished, he said. Delays in the project's schedule were caused by "unforeseen things," Mr. Roth said, such as boulders that had to be removed and bedrock in the area of the boat ramp that was shallower than expected. The project's scope is also being expanded to include some dredging. There is a hump of dirt at the end of the boat ramp, Mr. Roth said, so the town is filing for a change order and permits to remove it. "Why have a boat ramp with a speed hump in front of it?" he asked. "We're trying to do the right thing. It's just going to take a little more time." The town has hired an electrician to run power to the end of the pier, Mr. Roth said. A light and a power outlet will be installed. "We just think that, upon further review ... the most prudent thing to do was run power to the end of the pier," he said. Although the changes could affect the overall project costs, the project is still within its budget, according to Mr. Roth. "Every project has contingency built in. We are well within our contingency."
JANUARY THAW Ice formations loosened up around Hoppy's Landing at Long Island - Fairhaven, MA, as the recent Arctic Blast was replaced by a brief southwesterly wind and brought temperatures above freezing for the first time since Christmas. A compilation of ground still shots and drone aerials taken January 9, 2018 at 11AM. *ML's Note: Today's high temperature reached 39.8!
Officer Richard Claflin was probably the first in the region to initiate a dash cam in his cruiser in 1983. He taped every street in the Town Of Fairhaven in the fall of 1983. He did this to document what Fairhaven streets were like for other to see someday. Over 30 years later, the clips have been transferred and digitized in several 9 minute segments. All sections in town were covered. Original police calls can be heard on the cruisers radio. For those who weren't around town back then, I caution this is as boring as watching paint dry. But if you were around, the footage may show someone you knew, a familiar car or house or maybe even yourself. Guess where the clips were taken! MLBaron Historic Archives.
