West Island sister-site
mlbaron.webs.com/
This web-site contains some fascinating history going back to the days of the Wampanoag Indians, when the island was named "Nokatay" or the "hunting place". One of the first naval engagements by the US Navy against the British in the Revolution took place right off shore. It's role in World War II with the vintage observation tower visible by land ,sea and air is by far one of the most visible and prominent landmarks in Buzzard's Bay. West Island's connection to The Mayflower, and the changes it has undergone from a simple place to fish and graze cows has evolved into a year round community of about 365 homes. West Island also has one of the top ten beaches in all of New England. More than half of the island is a state reservation and park. Complete weather conditions, tides, and other information is provided by the island's own weather station.

WIWS International Feed
www.awekas.at/en/instrument.php?id=4774
AWEKAS is an acronym for "Automatisches WEtterKArten System" (= automatic weather map system) and is, as the name suggests, a system which produces overview maps from the weather data provided by participating private weather stations. The data is made available to AWEKAS by the weather station operators who upload a small text or CSV file to their own website. AWEKAS then collects this data automatically, and processes it to provide up to date maps. Data from WIWS Station #4-Weather Envoy

APRS - West Island Weather Data
www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?KA1WBH
WIWS data and graphs can be viewed on this site. The information is uploaded every 10 minutes 24/7. This site has many links to Amatuer radio and NOAA web sites. The Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) is a private-public partnership with three main goals: 1) to collect weather data contributed by citizens; 2) to make these data available for weather services and homeland security; and 3) to provide feedback to the data contributors so that they have the tools to check and improve their data quality. In fact, the web address, wxqa.com, stands for weather quality assurance. There are over 6,000 registered CWOP members world wide and a graph of the number of North American CWOP stations sending data over the past four days is shown under the older name APRSWXNET. The number of world-wide citizen weather stations sending data through APRS-IS (Internet-Service) is shown for the past 4 years. CWOP members send their weather data by internet alone and internet-wireless combination to the findU server and then every 15 minutes, the entire data set is sent from the findU server to the NOAA MADIS server. The data are checked for quality and then redistributed to users. There are over 500 different user organizations of mesonet data.

The Weather Review Roundup
www.westislandweather.com/theweatherreview.htm
Two dedicated weather spotters Tom Carr - WA1KDD (Acushnet,MA) and Dennis Bollea - N1WJI (Fairhaven, Ma) Review the weather that was through detailed observations from their locations. Here's an example of Dennis Bollea's comments for May 2009: Comments: Lots of cloudy rainy days this May in Fairhaven. 16 days had measurable precipitation. Sunshine was rather scarce with 14 days judged to be predominantly overcast and just 4 days being judged clear...The first half of the month was on the warm side of normal and the end was kind of cool. The month ended up being 0.2 degrees above normal...The spring season was wet with normal temperatures." Tom Carr's comments May 2009: A warmer than normal May with somewhat above normal precipitation here in Acushnet. It was the wettest May since 2007 which saw 7.43" of precipitation. May 2007 was the wettest on my 31 years of record. The first 9 days of May 2009 where ugly with some rainfall eachday for a total of 2.49" for the period. A very unstable atmosphere on the 12th.produced thunder here by early afternoon with small soft hail ( groupal ) and 0.45" of rain. Yet another round of unsettled weather occurred from the 14-18th. of May with 0.86" of rain and drizzle and fog. Most of their reports are kept on this page so one review back several months.

WEST ISLAND OIL SPILL 2003
www.westislandweather.com/oilspill2003.htm
From initial reports an estimated 14,700 gallon spill of No.6 oil was revised upwards to almost 100,000 gallons within a few days. Although the spill was wide spread along the SouthCoast, the ordeals incurred by emergency officials and cleanup crews in the West Island vicinity are revealed with a first person recollection. There is much discussion as to the mystery barge and tug that was spotted at Anchorage “L” by several observers hours before reports of the oil spill fitting the same description of Bouchard Barge No.120, the barge that created the spill. Eventually a barge and tug would later be identified as the No.120 at the exact same location, however it was stated to have arrived on the scene after 5:30 P.M. by the United States Coast Guard and Bouchard officials.

The Hurricane Barrier
www.westislandweather.com/thehurricanebarrier.htm
WEST ISLAND: On May 21, 1966 the dedication of the largest Hurricane Barrier in the world took place in New Bedford, MA. Forty-five years later, this massive stone structure has yet to be given the "ultimate test" for which it was designed for; a 1938 style Category 3 Hurricane. Although the dike closes up to a dozen times a year for storm events that bring southerly gales and tidal surges, a closure for a hurricane is a rare occurance. Hurricane Bob in 1991 met the criteria for closure as the Category 2 storm impacted Southern New England causing over $1.5 Billion in damages. New Bedford's inner harbor was protected by the dike from a storm surge of about 5-feet. A major hurricane hasn't impacted the region since. Experts warn, that after 20 years, we're long overdue
